Mover Storage in New Jersey
General Storage Tips
If you're a mover in New Jersey, you may need some storage space at some point.
Maybe you'll be moving to a smaller home, temporarily storing your furniture while your house is being remodeled, or maybe you've just run out of room and can't move to a larger home yet.
Two main New Jersey storage options are to either lease a NJ self storage unit or, if you're hiring a New Jersey mover, store your items in their warehouse.
New Jersey self storage facilities give you access to your items at just about any time you like, whereas if your goods are stored in a New Jersey mover's warehouse, you may not have access to them.
Because security, costs and accessibility all vary it's best to check with your NJ moving company for specifics.
Insuring Items in Storage
Self storage renters are responsible for insuring their own items in storage.
Some New Jersey self storage facilities may offer limited insurance coverage with the cost of coverage based on the estimated value of what's in the storage unit, but most will suggest you secure insurance on your own and may even give you insurance hand outs when you lease your unit.
Most Homeowner's insurance policies will insure your personal property for only 10 percent of your personal property limits when your property is stored off premises in a storage facility or other location. Some Renter's policies also have this limitation while a few Renter's policies provide 100% coverage for your personal property no matter where it's located. Because of variations from policy to policy, read your own policy and if you don't understand the coverage restrictions or need additional coverage, speak with your insurance agent or insurance company about your concerns.
Types of New Jersey Storage Facilities
Here are three types of storage that are available:
- Type A Storage - Features of Type A storage may include
electrified gates, security cameras, concrete storage units, and/or brick walls.
- Type B Storage - Usually includes a mix of metal
and concrete storage units surrounded by a fence. May or may not have security cameras and other security features.
- Type C Storage - Basic, inexpensive no frills storage
units. This type of storage unit typically provides little
or no security and is best for storing items that don't have much value.
New Jersey Storage Basics
Remember that your stored items may be in a unit where there is no ventilation. The storage unit may also be susceptible to roof leaks and surface flooding. Many self storage units are not insulated or climate controlled. Here are a few storage tips for any mover in New Jersey or other Garden State resident who needs to temporarily store some items in a storage facility:
- Use tarps, plastic sheets or pallets on the floor of the storage unit if you need to keep the items off the floor to prevent moisture and potential water damage from possible surface flooding in ground floor units in low lying areas.
- Allow for as much air flow as possible to prevent mold and mildew damage, especially in high humidity areas. This means keeping items slightly away from the wall whenever possible, and if you need to protect your things from potential roof leakage make sure any coverings you use allow for ventilation by not wrapping them tightly around the items they're supposed to be protecting.
- Cover upholstered furniture with cotton sheets for dust protection while retaining ventilation.
- Cover mattresses and box springs, with cotton sheets, and stand securely on edge. Cardboard and plastic are not recommended because cardboard absorbs
moisture and plastic traps condensation, so both end up promoting mold and mildew.
- Leave some room at the front of your storage unit. You don't want to have to constantly take things out in order to get to something farther back in the storage unit. When loading your unit try to put items you might need sooner in the front of the unit and don't use them as foundations for stacking other items.
- Consider installing shelving in your unit if the lease and construction of the unit allow to better organize your space and to hold more things. Self-standing cabinets and shelving are also very handy for organizing your storage space.
- Make the most of the cubic volume in your storage unit by stacking things items, especially boxes. Don't stack higher than you can reach, place heavier boxes at the
bottom and don't over pack or under pack the boxes. This will help prevent bulging and crushing of boxes and help make the stacks more stable. Don't leave the unit until the stacks are stable and are not prone to tip over while you're gone.
- Use the tops of dressers as a base for stacking boxes. Also place items inside the drawers.
- Clean out any refrigerators or freezers you're storing and let them air dry before you put them into storage. Additionally,
leave the doors partly open for ventilation. Use the shelving and drawers inside refrigerators or freezers to store additional items.
- Drain gas and oil from lawn mowers, trimmers, weed blowers, and other tools that have engines.
