Moving Supplies

If you're getting ready to move you'll need moving supplies on hand to get the job done.

Moving Supplies

This page is all about the moving supplies you'll need. We also provide packing tips, storage tips and moving tips so you'll be ready for moving day. If you need moving boxes, make sure you check out our moving boxes page, too.

Moving companies can refuse to transport boxes you packed yourself if:

If the moving company has to repack one or more boxes, you're probably going to incur additional charges, so save yourself time and money by buying good boxes and moving supplies from the outset.

If you have especially valuable items to pack, you may want your moving company to handle these items.

Your mover won't accept responsibility for damage to items they didn't pack unless there's damage to the outside of the box.

Moving Boxes

Purchase only quality moving boxes. If you use poor quality or worn boxes there's a much greater chance that some of your items will be damaged. Many moving supply stores are available in and around New Jersey or you can buy your moving supplies online. Your local New Jersey moving company may also be willing to sell you moving boxes, including used moving boxes that are still in very good condition. You'll want to compare prices.

Purchase an adequate number of the different types and sizes of moving boxes available. Some Garden State moving supply stores will allow you to return boxes that are unused if you buy too many. Otherwise, just be sure you can buy additional boxes as you need them and that you'll get them in time to complete your packing chores before your move. More information on moving boxes is available on our Moving Boxes page.

Packing Paper

Avoid using newspaper for wrapping items and use plain packing paper instead. Newsprint is hard to remove from china and glassware. Save your newspapers for filling voids in boxes for added cushioning. Purchase packing paper from your moving supply company.

Bubble Wrap and Cushioning

Use bubble wrap for your fragile items. Small bubble wrap is recommended for smaller, lighter weight items, whereas large bubble wrap is better for bigger, heavier items. You can also line your boxes with bubble wrap for better protection of fragile items.

Packing Tape and Dispenser

Look for good quality 2 inch box sealing tape. It's recommended that you look for the plastic and strapping types of tape that moving companies like to use. A good dispenser with a built-in cutting edge and a comfortable grip are great for saving time and make the job of packing go much more smoothly. You'll probably find a number of uses for any tape dispenser you invest in because you can use it around the house for other sealing jobs.

Labels and Markers

Using a computer and printer to make your labels before you start packing can be a time saver and will assure that your labels are readable. Avery Office Products provides a variety of labels you can use, including blank and pre-printed specialty labels, like Fragile or Heavy that work with most types of printers.

If you're hand marking your moving boxes you'll want to buy some good quality markers. Even if you print your labels, the markers will come in handy for last minute packing after you're printer has been packed or you run out of pre-printed labels. Blue or Black are good colors for most marking chores and Red is a good choice for "Fragile" or "Heavy". You'll also want to mark boxes you want to move yourself or those you want to open first. Always print clearly and large enough to see at least the room information from several feet away. It's a good idea to label both the top and at least one side of your boxes so you can see where they belong even when they're stacked on a dolly.
